In this episode, Monica Phillips shares how being an LGBTQ+ parent has been a significant influence in her faith journey. Monica tells the story of her child coming out as transgender while preparing for a mission for the LDS Church and the subsequent struggles she and her husband faced. Monica also discusses another child, a daughter, coming out as gay and how their family as a whole has navigated these journeys while maintaining their faith. Recently, they discovered that their transgender child (AFAB) has “XY” chromosomes, an intersex condition. Monica emphasizes the importance of open communication, patience and embracing uncertainty. In supporting their child’s decision to transition, Monica learned firsthand to commend, or surrender, control to God and to trust in God’s plan for her and her family.
